Bickley on Fire

By Walter Mitchell

Tonight. NFL fans all over the planet earth get to see the unveiling of the NFL's 2026-2027 schedule and within minutes of its release, as a rite of passage, the fans will be predicting their team's W and L record.

Enter Arizona Sports Radio's Dan Bickley.

This timely rant from the F. Scott Fitzgerald of modern sportswriters is an absolute bonfire.

If I were Nick Carraway, what I would like to shout over to my charismatic friend is:

"They're a rotten crowd, you're worth the whole damn bunch put together."

Everything that Bick said about the NFL's insidious greed and the Cardinals' difficult schedule is spot-on.

I just hope that this year the Cardinals "do not go gentle into that good night." (Dylan Thomas)

That they "rage, rage against the dying of the light."

The thing is ---     and it's the very reason why I never predict the Cardinals' W and L record at any time, especially ahead of time --- you never know "on any given Sunday."

I adamantly refuse to live in a world without hope.

Because of stunning moments like this:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Author John Green's take:

The Gale

One of Emily Dickinson's lines in this iconic poem that stands out to me is:

"And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard - "

Hope is "sweetest" when sung by the bird in the middle of a storm.

This is a nifty paradox.

A paradox is a contradiction that contains a curious truth.

Hope is what the bird clings to and sings to even under the direst of circumstances.

"And sore must be the storm - that could abash the little bird"

Here Dickinson personifies the storm (capital G on Gale personification) as a savage, relentless bully who attempts to "abash" (humiliate) the bird to render it voiceless, thrown perilously off its perch and thoroughly defeated.

Um, not so fast.

Here comes the curious truth.

The bird of hope "never stops - at all -"

That's why the Gale is "sore" -

Because the bully loses in the end.

Conclusion:

When I see the Cardinals schedule tonight, all I am going to focus on is how our team can go 1-0 on Week 1.

One of my favorite author's, Anne Lamott, wrote about some sage advice that her father gave to her little brother. It was Memorial Day Weekend and, of course, her brother waited until Monday afternoon to do his science project, which was to describe in detail twenty birds that are indigenous to the San Francisco Bay area. When her brother was panicking about where to even begin such an arduous assignment, her father put his hand on her brother's shoulder and said, "take it bird by bird, buddy."

The Cardinals will have 17 games on the new schedule, and I venture to take each one of them "bird by bird."

  1. Bickley ain't wrong about NFL greed he could've also thrown in the greed by every other major professional sport and you know who's to blame? The fans who willingly pay to support whatever the price and quality of play is. College football greed is right there and we'll soon pay to watch that too. Sports has always been our most appreciated respite for what we have outside our door. Even the Romans got it.
With respect to hope for the Cardinals. Buddy, Emily Dickinson, John Green and Anne Lamott never met or heard of a Bidwill.

  2. Great write-up. I don't have Prime, Netflix or Peacock. Each season, I find myself watching less and less football but the NFL doesn't seem to care about fans like me. Greed rearing its ugly head is todays face of the NFL. "Money, it's a gas. Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash".

Yes the schedule will be brutal but IMO, this offense has the potential of scoring lots of points this season. That's what I'm looking forward to because even with my blind loyalty shades on, I have no hope for this team even making the playoffs and with the NFL taking away my ability to watch games on the streaming services I am already paying for, I really don't care.

  3. Reminds me of this famous speech...I'm certain NFL (Execs, Owners and Elite) all took notes!

  4. Buckley hit a nerve that is beginning to turn more into an abcess. The quality and volume of the NFL is begiining to frey at the seams. I started to watch less of it the last two years. Part of it might have been how bad the Cardinals have played . The majority of it had to do with overexposure.. I can do without the watered down Thursday night games. I dont have the time for MNF double headers. The international games continue to grow in number but you won't catch me getting up early on a Sunday for any of those games. The advent of needing three different platforms between network, You Tube, NFL ticket and Prime was probably the breaking point. There is never any circumstance that I will pay per view a playoff game. When you find out in court litigation ESPN was going to offer fans a ticket option of $35 to watch all their favorite teams game IGoodell showed his true face...enough.You can turn on college football and see better energy and hustle on any given Saturday. The enthusiasm and studio teams are much better. If the NFL continues its current path the law of diminishing returns is already in motion. Your product just isnt that good anymore. And the future international playoff games and pay per view Superbowls count me out.

  5. Looks like that week 1 matchup is against the Chargers. While that certainly isn't an easy matchup, the Chargers did finish the year poorly. No one actually knows how LeFleur will call the offense. If he's worth anything as a coach, he'll pull out all the stops and try to shock the world. That's how you go up 1-0.

    1. Beating the Chargers would shock the world. They hired probably the most brilliant intellectual to ever call offensive plays in the NFL-Yale kid. So smart, the Cards never bothered to interview him for anything.
Kyle Shanahan's Assessment: Kyle has explicitly stated, "He’s one of the smartest coaches I've been around and he's been huge to our team and huge for me throughout my entire career."
McVay's assessment: "He is so much smarter than me!" when discussing McDaniel's complex understanding of all 22 players on the field.
Sure hope Lefluer shows him up. Ya think Rallis is up for it?

  6. The biggest reason not to purchase all of these channels to watch these greedy nfl owners teams is by being a Cardinals fan, after seeing that schedule, a 4 - 13 record isn’t going to motivate many to go to games or waste money on streaming services and common sense fans will probably spend that money on food, gas and maybe a family vacation. Besides the worst owner in sports , that 2026 schedule and division is the reason why AZ have their current GM and HC. Convince me otherwise Walter.
