Clayton Tune: The Fateful Path of an NFL Legacy by Walter Mitchell photo: @azcardinals.com via Instagram During the second night of the 2023 NFL Draft, Clayton Tune received a call from the Green Bay Packers. The Packers wanted to assure Clayton of their interest in drafting the University of Houston quarterback at some point on day three. When the Arizona Cardinals selected Clayton Tune with the #139 pick a day later, he was surprised, given that the Cardinals had not expressed any significant interest in him during the pre-draft process. The Cardinals were not one of the six teams that brought him in for 30 visits (Texans, Saints, Browns, Steelers, Bucs, Giants). Tune had also been given a private workout by the Rams. The eventual link the Cardinals had to Clayton Tune was that Israel Woolfork was one of his coaches at the Senior Bowl. At that time, Woolfork had just finished his second year of a Bill Walsh/Bill Willis coaching fellowship with the Cleveland Browns. A...
You had mentioned Gardeck during your pod as it relates to the positives he would have on this defence and his production.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that would be very valuable to this team now is his special teams play. Having lost so many core special teamers to date, his work on that unit would have more of an impact than his defensive value, especially since if feels like that unit is costing us games right now.
This!
DeleteReally appreciated the off-season plan, a nice "pipe"-dream of something which should happen but unfortunately will not. Excellent points as to the NFL have-have-nots as well. What we can expect is a continuation of the product we were sold in 1988 when AZ wasn't patient enough to wait for an expansion team.
ReplyDeleteAnother good podcast. You guys are knocking it out of the park. I completely agree on Brissett being a starting QB. Invest future draft capital into fixing the lines and the secondary and JB will take this team into the playoffs. That is one of the few things I am confident about this team. I also really like Sams idea of the Manning family becoming part owners of the Cardinals and MB relinquishing all team decision making to a president chosen by Payton or Eli. That said, I don't think it would ever happen and here is why. MB is a Bidwill raised by BB and as they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Because AZ doesn't have any NFL football tradition prior to 1988, I think Bidwill views State Farm Stadium as everybody's stadium even visiting teams and their fans which it often is. I've lived in the Phoenix area for a long time now and by far the majority of the people I know are fans of other teams. This IMO is why MB doesn't lose sleep if his decision making is not working. He is just a rich silver spoon who inherited an NFL toy to play with that has absolutely no chance of failing. He can sit back in his luxury suite sipping his 21-year-old whiskey and say to himself, "listen to the fans cheering" because at State Farm Stadium, there will always be cheering fans.
ReplyDeleteGotta think if the Mannings get involved, it could lead to Arch as well - once he develops more.
DeleteI also have to think that if the focus was to build a real winner in AZ, the number of fans in the area would have certainly grown as well. Perhaps they would never part with their game tickets to visiting teams because they would be so pumped to watch the game themselves. MB would be even richer than he is.
Agreed on fans being more loyal with more positive consistency and success. During the SB run in 2008-09, Cardinal fans were coming out of the woodwork with each playoff game victory. I watched that SB with Steeler fans who said, if the Cardinals win its all good.
DeleteThanks Jethro, as always. You are loved here man!
DeleteI can’t see another win unless the Rams rest their starters last game having wrapped up the #1 seed
ReplyDeleteMe either. I believe the coaching staff has lost the locker room at this point. That is why we're witnessing games filled with penalties and continued poor execution. The owner don't care, coaches don't care, the players follow suit. Perhaps they've all been told we're losing as many games we can to procure the highest draft pick possible. That would not shock me.
DeleteThe coaches can thank Jacoby, Fro, M-Willy, Trey, Calais, Sweat and Budda for leading the team. The players know how underprepared they are by the coaches, but they are playing for pride and for each other.
