Mike LaFleur By Walter Mitchell Last night while watching the Panthers versus the Packers on Thursday Night Football, I was thinking of how much Jonathan Gannon screwed the Cardinals while he was the head coach. The defense that the Packers were playing last night is night-and-day more aggressive and disciplined that Gannon's ever was in Arizona. This disparity is as wide and deep as the Grand Canyon. Yes, Gannon has more developed talent to work with in Green Bay, but as was the case with Vance Joseph in his first season with Sean Payton, now that for the first time in 4 years he was surrounded by experienced front office execs and coaches, someone in Packers' organization was able to show Gannon how to address and correct the flaws in his defensive schemes. I thought it was a mistake with our last round of hires and hope the team does a better job with the new shakeup (although HC and OC positions are now filled). Looking forward to your forthcoming post on the subject.
ReplyDeleteOn the press conference, the major takeaway for me was LaFleur's anecdote about Bidwill offering up State Farm for him with both the 49ers and Rams situations. While Cardinals ownership is rarely talked about in a positive light, LaFleur's story seemed truly sincere. I thought Walter would appreciate that, given the frequent talk of "karma" and "football gods" on the podcast. On that note, let me ask this: if tampering to get Gannon and then tanking led us to the 2026 season, might those kind acts to our NFC West rivals have put LaFleur on our doorstep for a positive reason?
Maybe that's "out there" thinking, but hope for Cardinals' success is like the faint glimmer of an oasis in the desert that may or may not be a mirage.
