Jameson Geers is a very underrated tight end in the 2026 NFL Draft who will likely make an NFL roster despite not appearing in any 7 round mock drafts and likely being undrafted.

Geers started getting extensive playing time just a couple years ago, but his potential caught my eye way back in the 2023 season when he barely played.

Jameson Geers NFL Draft Profile Overview

While Minnesota isn’t known nationally as a tight end school, they’ve done a good job of producing players who stick around the NFL despite beginning as unheralded prospects.

Ko Kieft was expected to go undrafted in 2022, but he’s still in the NFL for the Bucs. Brevyn Spann-Ford went undrafted but has played 300+ snaps each of his first 2 seasons for the Cowboys. Then this past year Nick Kallerup wasn’t even in the consensus top-500, but proceeded to make the Seahawks 53 man roster, appearing in almost every game for the eventual Super Bowl Champions.

Geers is following in their footsteps as an unheralded prospect, but has a chance to see similar success.

Jameson Geers spent his high school career at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Illinois where he missed his senior season due to the 2020 HS Football shutdown in Illinois.

Despite being just a 3 star recruit and not in the top 500 prospects in the class, Geers had a solid offer sheet that included 14 power conference schools. He chose Minnesota over some well known tight end schools like Iowa, Wisconsin, and Cincinnati.

After redshirting his first season in 2021, Geers started seeing occasional playing time in 2022 and 2023. The Gophers were deep at tight end with the players mentioned above, but Geers stuck around and waited his turn.

He became a starter in 2024, and while his stats don’t necessarily jump off the page, he was a steady contributor for the Gophers as a receiver and a blocker. He combined for 496 receiving yards and 8 receiving touchdowns in that stretch.

When you watch Geers, you’ll notice he is very confident in his hands. He routinely catches the ball far away from his body, and is effective high pointing the ball in the end zone. He’s finished a ton of plays through contact, and has the soft hands you want to see from any receiver.

His athleticism is nothing special, and he isn’t a threat after the catch. He won’t win very often in man coverage, but he’s very smart against zone and is adept at settling down in open space and making himself available.

As a blocker, Geers has taken a nice step forward. He has long arms and a strong, proportional frame. He could stand to be more aggressive at times, but his form has improved and he has an adequate anchor when it’s needed.

The Gophers weren’t afraid to challenge him as a blocker, giving him a lot more responsibilities than just chipping. He lined up extensively as an inline tight end, roughly 75% of the time, so he needed to be able to hold his own as a solo blocker on occasion. It wasn’t always effective, but he’s much further along than the average tight end prospect.

NFL teams are desperate for tight ends that can block, and Geers is a solid option with the hands to provide a bit of value as a receiver as well.

He is a keenly instinctive zone cover corner who reads his man and the QB extremely well, which enables him to jump routes and make timely pass breakups and interceptions.  In man coverage, he lacks the requisite recovery speed to stay sticky on speedy receivers. But that's ok, as long as the coaches match him up with receivers whom he can run stride for stride with.  We have yet to see whether the 2024 concerns about Will Johnson's tackling, which may have been due to injuries.
