Cardinals' Interested in Aaron Rodgers and/or Brendan Sorsby?

By Walter Mitchell

While Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals' FO are still twisting in the wind with regard to his QB status and reasonable salary figures, suddenly, with another veteran QB out there twisting in the wind, there are rumors about the Cardinals and Aaron Rodgers having mutual interest in joining forces.

How Rodgers to Arizona could make sense:

1. Ties to Cardinals' QB coach Nathaniel Hackett, during Rodgers' haydays in Green Bay.

2. If Michael Bidwill wants a spike in ticket sales, this signing, more than any other, is made to order.

3. Possible endorsement from Teryl Austin, Rodgers' DC in Pittsburgh last season.

4. Endorsement from Isaac Seumalo, Rodgers' left guard in Pittsburgh.

5. The allure of the Cardinals' eye-popping offensive talent.

What it would likely take:

Contract in the neighborhood of $40M in guaranteed, plus performance incentives.

Currently the Cardinals' 2026 cap space is about $41.4M, 6th most in the league.

They are going to need roughly count $12M on the salary cap to sign their draft picks, which makes the Cardinals' effective cap space $29.3M, per Over The Cap.

Either two things need to happen:

1. The Cardinals sign Rodgers to a 2-year deal where they can defer a portion of the salary to the 2027 cap while being able to outbid the Steelers, who currently have only $5.3M of effective cap space.

2. The Cardinals may have to trade or release a player or two in order to sign Rodgers to a one-year deal.

Sorsby to Supplemental Draft?

Then there is the bizarre case of Brendan Sorsby potentially heading to the NFL's 2026 Supplementary draft. Sorsby is being treated for a gambling addiction, while the NCAA is considering possible sanctions for his rule violations to determine whether he should be permitted to play at Texas Tech this year, or not.

Have a listen to Albert Breer's interview on the Dan Patrick Show.

Breer is convinced that Brendan Sorsby only real option is to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, which takes place in June.

How drafting Brendan Sorsby could make sense:

1. Monti, Dave Sears and the Cardinals scouts spent more time of scouting Sorsby this year than any other college QB.

2. Had Sorsby declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, he could have very well been the Cardinals pick at #3.

3. Sorsby appears to be an excellent fit in Mike LaFleur's system given his pocket strength, toughness, superior mobility and ability to throw left and right dimes off play action passes and scrambles.

4. If they love Sorsby as much as has been rumored, then they could feel justified in offering a 1st round pick him and thereby outbid the field, that is, if the Jets offer a 2nd round bid.

5. Having Brendan Sorsby and Carson Beck on the roster could make the Cardinals' QB room set for the next 4 to 5 years and possibly well beyond.

6. If, and only if, the Cardinals believe that Sorsby's gambling addiction rehabilitation will be 100% successful.

Man, you can see why the Cardinals have interest. Talk about dual-threat QB skill sets! Remind anyone a little of Josh Allen?

On another envious note:

Here's how a downtrodden team rebuilds its defense:

Texans' Home-Grown Starters:

1st round picks:

* Stingley - 2022

* Anderson - 2023

2nd Round picks:

* Pitre - 2022

* Lassiter - 2024

* McDonald - 2026

3rd Round Pick:

* Bullock - 2024

5th Round Pick:

* To'o - 2023

Red Rain Questions:

1. Your thoughts on Aaron Rodgers?

2. Your thoughts on Brendan Sorsby?

3. Do either of them make sense to you?

4. if you could only have one of them, which one would you choose?

Comments

  1. I've always been a fan of Rodgers arm, but he will be 43 in December and he's just too expensive at this stage of his career IMO. Sorsby on the other hand would be a great addition to the team but is he worth a first or just wait until next season and get your QOTF. I would wait and use my first next year. Talent wise, they both make sense but their price tags are a big no for me. If I had to choose one, I would use a first on Sorsby before paying Rodgers big money.

  2. Rodgers - NO Freakin way!
    Sorsby - (Sic) Sure bring him on and cut Beck; perfect plan and use of resources
    Neither make any sense at this stage, we have our team which may win 4 games giving us a chance at QB next season.
    If I had to choose 1 I would choose Sorsby over Rodgers but neither are going to fix this roster or coaching staff.

  3. Love the entire Texans roster. They have built a solid core and should be lasting contender in the afc during the same time Bidwill has fired coaches, lost tons of games, and is so desperate he may sign a soon to be 50 yr old QB for one Reason, to make more $….and that my friends is the reason this owner will never win.. he bases every decision on money and control.. poor coaching terrible GM and players who just use him for more money….

    1. Most don't remember but the Texans suffered more than the Cardinals have before things got turned around. Their rebuild started 2019 and they went through some terrible seasons with one year lame duck coaches while stocking up on high draft picks before they started winning games. In fact, I would say the Cardinals are currently in a very similar position as the Texans were at that 2023 draft. The only difference, their draft had 2 Qb's and they picked 2nd and when up for a bonafided pass rusher where that wasn't available this previous draft.

      Texans record;
      2020 - 4-13
      2021 - 4-13
      2022 - 3-13-1

      One huge difference was the draft capital they receiver from the Watson trade that was able to fuel their turnaround. Similar to other teams such as the Seahawks and Patriots. Monti had to generate his own draft capital and was pretty much forced to do it with the WAJ trade to kick start our current rebuild.

      If Mike LaFleur is to our offence what Ryans was to the Texans defence, this could get interesting.

      Walter, an article looking at the similarities between both of these organization would be interesting and also inspiring. Even the draft picks kind of match up.

  4. The last 2 seasons, Rodgers made $14m and $15m . I'm not sure where you got the 40m number from but I don't think anyone is paying him that at 42 years old.

    1. I was gonna say the same thing. His tag this year is for less then 15M.

  5. For me, it’s a hard no on Rodgers. I don’t see the upside. Will he make the team better? Probably. But the best case scenario is that we win 9 to 10 games (which is highly unlikely), ilimp nto the playoffs, and lose in the wildcard round. All this will accomplish is taking us out of contention for the four or five excellent quarterbacks who are expected to be drafted in the first round next year, or requiring us to expend significantly more draft capital. The only upside is that Bidwill may sell more tickets to uninformed fans who believe we are getting Aaron Rodgers from 2016, not 2026. Which means it will probably happen!

    1. LOL so true but I'm not worried because Rodgers past psychedelic tea experimentation doesn't fit the older QB type Bidwill likes. I even think 15M is more than Bidwill wants to spend on a 42-year-old QB.
