Should Cardinals Gamble on Brendan Sorsby? Why the numbers suggest ---> yes.
By Walter MitchellFormer Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby has an on-line gambling issue. While he is now undergoing counseling to treat his addiction amidst an on-going NCAA investigation which is likely to result in a ruling that would prevent him from playing this season for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, it appears that his best option would be to enter his name to the NFL Supplemental Draft.
Because of the copious number of hours that Arizona Cardinals' GM Monti Ossenfort and his scouts dedicated to scouting Brendan Sorsby at Cincinnati this past season with what appeared to be the hope of drafting him this year ---> and in light of how favorable a candidate he is given the 2025 PFF college QB grades, the Cardinals' aspiration to make Brendan Sorsby their QBOF could come to full fruition if they outbid the field.
Highest profile college QBs in 2025 --- PFF grades: Overall --- Passing --- Running
1. Julian Sayin, Ohio St. --- 92.9 --- 92.5 --- 64.0
2. Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati --- 90.3 --- 86.3 --- 76.9
3. Dante Moore, Oregon --- 90.2 --- 90.2 --- 61.4
4. Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma St. --- 88.3 --- 86.1 --- 65.3
5. Trinidad Chambliss, Mississippi --- 87.8 --- 83.7 --- 74.9
6. Arch Manning, Texas --- 87.3 --- 81.0 --- 81.1
7. Jayden Maiava, USC --- 86.2 --- 81.0 --- 78.3
8. C. J. Carr, Notre Dame --- 85.1 --- 83.5 --- 65.9
9. Darian Mensah, Duke --- 84.1 --- 85.0 --- 49.2
10. Caden Pinnick, Washington St. --- 83.6 --- 77.5 --- 77.5
While Fernando Mendoza would be #2 on this list at 91.6 --- 90.7 --- 74.0, here are Ty Simpson's and Carson Beck's 2025 grades:
* Ty Simpson, Alabama --- 83.1 --- 81.4 --- 68.2
* Carson Beck, Miami FL --- 73.6 ---75.6 --- 49.5
Without question, had Brendan Sorsby declared for the 2026 NFL Draft he would have been one of the top 2 QBs taken. He even would have been in the conversation at pick #1 with Indiana's Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, because of the attractive combination of his passing and running skills.
Brendan Sorsby carries a 1st round value. Here's why:

What it would take for the Cardinals to acquire Brendan Sorsby:
1. Sorsby enters the NFL Supplemental Draft which likely will take place in late June of early July.
2. The Raiders and Jets do not bid their top 1st round picks on Sorsby. Raiders won't. Jets?
3. Cardinals have to bid their 1st round pick.
4. As Tom Pelissero and other NFL draft pundit have suggested, playoff caliber teams who pick late in the 1st round could jump at the chance to acquire Brendan Sorsby with a 1st round bid because they likely will be picking late 1st again next year, which would preclude them from being able to take one of the top rated QBs in the 2027 class.

The Positives:
1. Cardinals would have a stacked QB room with Brendan Sorsby and Carson Beck for at least the next 4-5 years.
2. Sorsby will have to agree to a no-betting contract clause that would protect the Cardinals' investment.
3. Having 4 pre-season games should help accelerate Sorsby's assimilation into Mike LaFleur's offense.
4. Using the 1st round pick on Sorsby eliminates any talk of Cardinals tanking this season.
5. Getting another jump on the Rams at QBOF.

I'm on the fence. I bet this team picks 5th to 10th in the next draft and if Jacoby starts, I think this team picks closer to 10th at which point I would be good with this team taking Sorsby with their first. I see a little Ben Roethlisberger in him with a twist of Caeser's Palace. Kidding, I'm not really worried about his gambling, at least that's what I'm betting on. If Jacoby stays with the team and they get Sorsby, this team would have Jacoby 6-4 235, Beck 6-5 235, Sorsby 6-3 235 and Minshew 6-1 225. I'm rooting for Kyler next season but I am so glad he's not a Cardinal anymore. After 7 seasons change was sorely needed. In a parallel universe somewhere, the Cardinals and Vikings both make it to the NFC Champ game with Kyler and Sorsby as the starters. Cards end up winning it all and the Bills lose their 5th Super Bowl.
ReplyDeleteWait until 2027 draft. The gambling issue speaks to player thinking he is above the law. Its a character issue. Fine player, just risky and Cardinals do not need added risks.
ReplyDeleteFor a team like the Cardinals, bidding a 1st or 2nd-round pick is a reckless gamble on a player who might be sidelined by league discipline, but snagging him in the 3rd or 4th round is a genius value play. At that price, you’re getting a franchise-caliber ceiling for the cost of a backup, effectively turning a potential character disaster into the biggest steal of the draft. They draft J Smith in the 1st and get an Edge or RT in the 2nd. The rebuild is over!
ReplyDeleteOnly the Cardinals would allow their supposedly starting QB twist in the wind for no reason other than financial and their goal to release him. If I am Brissett I would ask for my release and call Mike in Pittsburgh. Bidwill only cares about his worsening declining suite sales and will do the dumb Bidwill thing and sign ARod. Only to delay any growth that Beck or any other young QB for the upcoming season.
